Violinist

Violinist Calliope Smith (11), a sixth grader at Synapse School in California, studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College Academy with Natasha Makhijani. Described by one judge as “perform[ing] with great style, panache, and fidelity,” she has been a prize winner in many competitions, including the Arthur Grumiaux International Violin Competition, the Pacific Musical Society Competition, the American Virtuoso International Music Competition, the New York International Artists’ Association Praelusio Competition, and the Enkor Competition. She soloed with the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra in the Spring of 2022, will be performing Vivaldi's Winter with the New York Concerti Sinfonietta at Merkin Hall this Fall, and is appearing three times at Weill Recital Hall this year. During summers, she has attended the Heifetz Institute Junior Division, Intermuse International Music Festival, and the Violin Intensive, working with pedagogues Béla Horvath, James Stern, Amy Beth Horman, and Elizabeth Faidley.
